COASTAL DOUGLAS-FIR ECOSYSTEM IN METCHOSIN

Metchosin is surrounded by the Coastal Douglas-fir (CDF) ecosystem. This is an ecosystem at risk and under threat. Since CDF systems occur in regions favoured by people, these were some of the first forest types targeted for logging, and cleared for urban and agricultural development. The evidence of on-going impacts to CDF ecosystems is clear to anyone to driving to Metchosin through the surrounding municipalities. The massive logging effort on the perimeter of Metchosin means that protecting the natural habitat in the District is more vital than ever.

Protecting this ecosystem is also vital to protecting our water resources, both surface and groundwater sources, like Aquifer 606.
